This being a diptych of the left and centre portions of the original triptych (the right side part of which being something I may attempt sometime).

Two versions, original and tarted-up, both in Dai-Oban size.

I may write a long-winded essay describing the process and background surrounding the creation of the original Kuniyoshi print, but probably not, as the pictures are all that matter, really.

Seventh Simonson Scrapbook Issue

A Selection of Simonson

This post is incomplete.

This is not really surprising as it could never be complete. That is to say that attempting to recreate and show the career of the artist Walter Simonson will always be impossible. The reason? He has far too many drawings spread over the last six decades to ever compile a definitive overview of his work in one blog post.

More pictures to be added, obviously.

The Bridge of Khazad-dûm from 1965. The first serious attempt at drawing, according to Walt Simonson himself, following his reading Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

The Death Of Thor from 1966. Originally a pencil sketch on lined paper, completed after his discovery of Jack Kirby's work on Thor in 1965.

The Rampaging Hulk vs The X-Men from 1976. This was a promo ad, one of three, for the black and white Marvel Magazine Rampaging Hulk. Walt Simonson drew layouts for the first three issues that were finished by Alfredo Alcala, who is best known for his work with John Buscema on Savage Sword Of Conan. 

The Original unedited cover to Thor #264 from 1977. His lesser-known first run on the title, he again provided layouts for the stories which were completed by Tony DeZuniga and Ernie Chan. The cover itself was inked by Joe Sinnott, a legend in his own right and the finest inker ever to work in comics.

The cover to Marvel Age #1 from 1982. I've attempted to make it into an alternate first issue cover for the series Crystar (as the logo at the top says). This was the only drawing Walt Simonson contributed to the series, a promising story woefully treated that lasted 11 issues. The actual first issue cover was a painting by Bob Larkin.

Thor version of the Beta Ray Bill Thor promo poster from 1983.

One of the very few times Walt Simonson drew Iron Man, this is the cover to the 1986 Iron Man Annual (guest-starring X-Factor/The Original X-Men because it was Marvel and 1986). Walt Simonson drew a very 1968-1969 George Tuska style Iron Man, and you really can't get better than that.

Fear not. It’s nothing serious.

 

This isn’t the next post I’m working on at the moment. 

It’s more a collection of recreations of Convention sketches by the artist Walt Simonson. These are given away free by the artist and as a result they are quick pencil structure and marker drawings. As a result they are extremely rough, the pencil isn’t erased for example, yet there are good drawings amongst them. This is an attempt to make something out of them. They are also massively enjoyable to draw. Still, here they are, others to be added when I’ve done them…

Stopgap Post #1 (Not Filler)

 What I did while the World ended.

It's been a while since I posted anything new, this is because at the moment I am attempting to get ahead of myself, in a way. That is to say, I am trying to complete the drawings for my next post before I publish it, as at the moment I publish a post and add the drawings as I complete them. This creates a feeling of always running behind while being ahead, confusing I know, it would be more accurate to describe it as; having to complete something I was interested in while also creating things I am now interested in. 

The previous paragraph was a rather complicated way of saying that my next post won't be ready for a few weeks so until then here are some drawings to pass the time.

So, the pictures. As anyone who has read my first post for this blog, as well as anyone who finds their way here from Twitter, will know, I have been posting my recreations on social media for a good few years now. Then I stopped drawing for a year and a bittish, before the World stopped for what seems like years, but which is only really six months at the time of writing. In an attempt to break myself away from boredom and endless online streaming binge-watching marathons, I began recreating pictures, comic covers and splash pages really, just for myself. 

This new-found passion for drawing, which, among other things, led to the creation of this blog, has developed over this year, leading to a lot of these drawings being discarded as new interests arose.

Most, if not all, of these have been published on Twitter. However, those are reduced size versions due to my drawing really big, how big? About two-foot-wide by three foot tall.

Anyway, enough of this pointless wittering, here are the pictures…
